Every year is a new fight. It’s a new battle to obtain the goals, career, relationship, vacations, friends, etc. that we have been longing for. Each year people worldwide make the choice to grow and become better versions of themselves. We make bucket lists, find quotes to motivate us, new books to read, gyms to join, new eating habits to embrace. We work diligently to improve and to accomplish. It’s February, how’s things holding up for you? Is that resolution still alive and well….or have you burried it?
On my journey of improvement I’ve noticed one of the hardest things to do Is to make sure that you remain the New You that you’ve worked so hard to create. There’s nothing more frustrating than dropping $100 on workout gear and quitting in March, buying a domain for a blog and barely being able to put energy into it because of business, or downloading a bunch of podcasts only to later delete them because you need storage . These of course are specific to me but I know we’ve all been there where we just don’t quite hit the goal. I decided to write this post because I genuinely want us all to succeed. I don’t want “New Year, New Me” to become a mantra that we repeat year after year only to never see results. I don’t want us to enter another year where others view us higher and believe in us more than we do in ourselves.
SO, I sat down and asked God to reveal to me a new way to approach the year. I pray that it is beneficial and gives you the proper tools to help your new you remain “New.”
Try Things with Gods Guidance
Welcome God’s Guidance for the remainder of the year. Your life, your goals, your vision, your execution is a joint decision. It requires God’s approval and his guidance. Without it you will continue to pull up empty nets.
“Master, we tolled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking.”-Luke 5:5-6 ESV
This verse moves me so much because many of us (including me, definitely me) get into this super hero mindset of making things happen regardless of the circumstances. This habit can be helpful is some scenarios, like executing a program on a low budget, but in others it can prove to be detrimental. Sometimes the very circumstances were trying to overcome or “Grind Through” are giant TURN AROUND signs thrown up by God. It is important to be in tune with the Holy Spirit to make that you aren’t breathing life into dead habits or dead people.
Another thing to point out is that these people tolled all night without the help of God and took NOTHING. I think this accurately describes many of us in 2017. We put a lot of energy into trying to make things happen and we got frustrated when things didn’t move or get executed like we wanted. Not realizing that the missing piece was God. The verse goes on to say that after listening to the guidance of God they enclosed a large number of fish and their nets were BREAKING.
LET GOD BREAK NETS FOR YOU. They tried it with God and their nets became so full that they were breaking. Give God access, let him guide you and help you because your expectations and visions are already lower than what he WILL and CAN do for you to being with.
In the words of Gucci and Migos:
“You get the bag and fumble it
I get the bag and flip it and tumble it”- Quavo & Gucci
Yeah I know your surprised. Like how can I jump from God to Migos right? Well I did, ignore that this lyric was originally about drugs and think of it as applying to your everyday goals and aspirations. Imagine this bag being full of your goals for after graduation, your financial stability, your spiritual growth, your relationship goals, etc. Whenever we try to obtain the contents of this bag on our own we will always fumble and become frustrated wondering why the goals and deadlines we set for ourselves haven’t been reached.
Once you hand that bag to God he will flip it and tumble it in ways you cannot imagine. He will BREAK your net and provide you with clarity, guidance, and preparation along the way.
Take Time to Recalibrate
“But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. Be he would withdraw to desolate places and pray”-Luke 5:15-16 ESV
Your reputation will always travel ahead of you. As you go through life developing your skills and finding your calling others will surely learn about you. This will create more people demanding your time and energy throughout the day.
There are only 24 hours in a day
8 hours for sleeping | 8 hours for working / school + school work | 8 hours for ______
Make sure you allocate some of those remaining 8 hours to withdraw and pray. During this time you can check in with God to make sure that you are on path to reach the goals that ya’ll have established together. God’s plan for you can change in an instant. If you aren’t in communication with him you could be ensuring that you are walking further away from the goals you set for 2018. (For those of you who watched “What Happened to Monday” on Netflix you should know how important the end of the day round up is)
Take time for yourself no matter what the demand is from others, and if they get upset direct them to Luke 5:15-5:16. Because if you aren’t setting time aside completely undisturbed with God you will always be behind the curve. God could change a timeline of a goal, delete a goal completely, or even introduce new ones and if you aren’t communicating with him daily all you will do is walk in frustration and exhaustion right back to the 2017 version of you.
Seek and Tell Testimony
For the remainder of 2018 denounce the idea of shame. We get so caught up in the idea of “leaving things in *insert year here*” that we forget that the previous year built our resilience and foundation for the current year. Don’t get me wrong, we need to leave the negative and toxic ideals and habits behind, but we should keep what we learned from them and share openly through testimony. Have you rolled your eyes yet? I’m sure you have cause who’s going to share openly right? Well the answer should be you. The bible says:
“For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” Hebrews 2:18 ESV
We’ve gotten it all wrong by thinking that we aren’t tied to one another. The brief sharing of your testimony could be what someone needs to overcome the demon they’ve been battling for years. A brief one on one conversation about your battle with depression, your health complications, your past substance abuse, your relationships or soul ties, etc. is all it takes.
The telling of your testimony also helps you to remember that you have overcame your battles by the grace of God. It is empowering to watch faces light up in disbelief over your triumph in Christs name. Telling your testimony will continue to remind you that *que organ* The SAME GOD who was with you back then UH HUH is the SAME GOD who is with you right now. It will help push you to towards the new and remind you to not revert back to the old you.
It is also important to seek testimony from others. It is obvious that as you level up and become someones “life goals” on Instagram MORE issues will come your way. I’m talking “it’s night fall on mine craft and you haven’t built your house yet” issues. When you meet up with others who are where you want to be in life, and maybe not even where you want you want to be in life, listen to their testimonies. It will give you the strength to push through and put your faith where it should belong……in GOD.
Statistics show that 80% of NYE Resolutions fail by February. Don’t follow that trend. Seek God’s Guidance, check in with him everyday, share your testimony, and listen to the testimony’s of others.
God is always here waiting on us to call on him, lean on him, seek him, grow in him, praise him, obey him, follow him, love him, etc. for the reminder of 2018…..Just Do It.
A Willing Vessel
For all of you posting on Instagram, Twitter, FB, Snapchat, Etc. about how hurt you are and how you are so “over *insert curse word here*” The bible says it best:
“It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.”- Psalm 118:8 ESV
So please take refuge in God
