The Pursuit of Peace

The methods that you use to internalize and channel the peace you already have will most likely fall in line with the methods that I provide. In short, seeking peace spiritually is based in going to God for every issue, holding no fear or anxiety, and giving in to Gods will. Spiritual peace is different than the peace you feel when your getting your toes done or sitting by the lake. Spiritual peace is earthy, warm, and worth the wait. This is a peace that will replenish itself as long as you play your part.

Ways to Seek Peace Spiritually:

  • Give it to God: This means leaning on God 100% for everything. This means trusting him and leaning not on your own understanding when it comes to certain situations. If you willingly give every situation to God without hesitation you are seeking peace. You aren’t waiting for it to go down hill first or trying your way first you are automatically handing it over to God. This could be finances, relationship issues, grades, career, car situations, leadership situations, conflict, etc. It all boils down to knowing the battle isn’t yours and letting God handle it.
  • Forgiveness: Many of us don’t have peace because there are people that we haven’t forgiven. We want them to earn our forgiveness when in reality they are entitled to it. This also extends to ourselves. Many of us lack peace because we have done things that we aren’t proud of and we let that stick to us and drag us away from our purpose. The word tells us that we should always forgive, and in order to be at peace we must actively do so. This also means that we have to accept that we may have to forgive someone before we receive an apology from them.
  • Keeping his commandments: Abiding by God’s commandments is another way to actively seek peace. If we keep God’s commandments peace will follow. Keeping his commandments by not gossiping, being drunk, breaking the law of the land, not lying, not having sex, not cussing, etc. These things have consequences and can get us into situations where we have the opposite of peace. God’s commandments were put into place in order to protect our peace and provide us with salvation. When we go against his will we are willingly walking into a hectic environment. We are subjecting ourselves to additional hurt, confusion, and chaos that can be avoided by just abiding in his word.
  • Walking in your purpose: Many of us know or have an idea of what we have been called to do and how to glorify God in the process. Running away from that will disrupt your peace. Your calling may not be what you want to do at this moment but it will be the most fulfilling thing to do. Once your purpose is found and you give into it you will move throughout life at peace knowing that you are doing what you are called to do. Time is very important and I am a firm believer that how you spend that time determines how peaceful you truly feel.
  • Humbling yourself: God opposes the proud but give grace to the humble. There are numerous verses in the bible talking about the importance of humbling yourself under the mighty hand of God. The goal in life is to remain humble no matter what happens and giving the glory to God. Pride comes before a fall therefore, pride can get in the way of your peace. You humbling yourself is a way to actively pursue peace because you are canceling out your pride. By canceling out your pride you are taking down a barrier that can stop you from doing all of the things I listed above as well as block your ability to communicate to and receive messages from God.
  • Seek and Ye Shall Find: Asking God for peace is also a simple way yo pursue peace. Peace is always on the move and your best bet to catch it is through God. God has the ability to provide a peace that is unexplainable and at times unbelievable. God will cover you in his peace, if you open your mouth and make it known what you need from him. Just as Jesus spoke to the storm in Mark 4:39 saying “Peace be still!” he will speak to whatever situation you are in. Seek and ye will find….peace.

Here are a couple of verses that talk about peace:
  • “Turn away from evil and do good, Seek peace and pursue it” – Psalm 34:214 ESV
  • “He must turn away from evil and do good, he must seek peace and pursue it”- 1 Peter 3:11 ESV
  • “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” – John 14:27 ESV
  • “So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.”- 2 Timothy 2
  • “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7 ESV
  • “The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.”-Psalm 29:11 KJV
  • “And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful”.- Colossians 3:15 ESV
  • “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.”- 1 Corinthians 14 ESV
  • “What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me —practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” – Philippians 4:9 ESV
  • “The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.”-Exodus 14:14 NKJV
Of course this is not an exhaustive list but just a few verses that speak about peace, more can be found online and most importantly in your bible.
